The Inner West has a surprisingly strong playground scene — from large-scale adventure playgrounds to quiet neighbourhood parks with nature play. Here's a practical guide sorted by suburb.

Sydney Park — St Peters/Alexandria

Best for: Ages 3–12, the whole family

The clear standout. Sydney Park's playground is built around four heritage brick chimneys from the park's former brickworks era, and it's one of the most interesting playgrounds in Sydney. There are climbing structures at multiple heights, a slippery dip, and enough going on to keep most ages occupied for an hour or more.

The park itself is massive (44 hectares), so there's plenty of space to run around after the playground too.

Address: Sydney Park Road, St Peters Parking: Free on site Facilities: Toilets, café (The Pavilion), BBQs

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park — Newtown

Best for: Ages 2–8, nature play

Set in a heritage cemetery park, the playground here is intentionally naturalistic — wooden structures, sandpit, water play pump, gentle hill for rolling down. It feels very different from the standard council-spec equipment and tends to hold kids' attention for a long time.

The water pump is a big hit in summer. Bring a change of clothes.

Address: Church Street, Newtown Parking: Street parking on Church Street Facilities: Toilets, shaded seating

Petersham Park — Petersham

Best for: All ages

A well-maintained park with separate toddler and older kids play areas. The equipment is relatively new and there's a good mix of climbing, sliding, and swinging. The park has open grass areas, a basketball court, and free BBQs.

Address: Crystal Street, Petersham Parking: Street parking Facilities: Toilets, BBQs, basketball court

Ashfield Park — Ashfield

Best for: Ages 3–12, skaters/scooter riders

Ashfield Park has a recently upgraded playground plus a skate park right next to it, which works well if you have mixed-age kids — younger ones on the play equipment while older kids use the skate park. There's also a duck pond nearby and free outdoor gym equipment.

Address: Charlotte Street, Ashfield Parking: Free on site Facilities: Toilets, duck pond, skate park, free BBQs

Leichhardt Park — Leichhardt

Best for: Ages 2–10

A solid park with a good playground and a great location on the Iron Cove foreshore. The waterfront path starts here, so you can combine a playground session with a walk along the bay. The Leichhardt Aquatic Centre is next door if you want a swim after.

Address: Nelson Street, Rozelle (northern entrance) Parking: Street parking on Nelson Street Facilities: Toilets, waterfront walk, adjacent aquatic centre

Tempe Recreation Reserve — Tempe

Best for: Ages 2–10, cyclists

A large recreational reserve with good playground equipment, open oval, and a BMX track. The reserve sits alongside the Cooks River path, so it's great if you've cycled along the river. The playground has a mix of age ranges covered.

Address: Princes Highway, Tempe Parking: Free on site Facilities: Toilets, BMX track, sports fields, cycling path access

Balmain Park — Balmain

Best for: Harbour views, ages 2–8

A classic inner harbour park with a small playground, open grass, and great harbour views across to the CBD. The park is small but the location is special — watching the ferries while the kids play is a genuinely nice way to spend a morning.

Address: Darling Street, Balmain Parking: Street parking (limited — go early on weekends) Facilities: Toilets, seating, harbour views

What about bigger adventure playgrounds?

If you want a larger, more destination-style playground experience, the closest options outside the Inner West are:

  • Darling Quarter (CBD) — Darling Harbour has one of Sydney's most elaborate free playgrounds, about 20 minutes from Newtown by car
  • Centennial Park (Eastern Suburbs) — multiple playgrounds throughout the park
  • Blue Gum Long Day Care (Lilyfield) — not a public playground, but the surrounding Lilyfield area has several good parks
