Sutherland Shire has a distinct advantage over most Sydney regions: many of its best playgrounds sit next to genuinely beautiful natural settings. Here's the guide.

Gunnamatta Park — Cronulla

Best for: Ages 2–10, beach combination

A foreshore park on the calm Gunnamatta Bay side of Cronulla, with a playground, BBQ facilities, and a free swimming enclosure in the bay. One of the best locations of any playground in Sydney — you can combine the play equipment with a swim in the calm bay water.

Address: Nicholson Parade, Cronulla Facilities: Toilets, BBQs, free swimming enclosure, foreshore seating

Bangor Oval and Park — Bangor

Best for: Ages 2–12

A large open park with good modern playground equipment, open ovals, and BBQ facilities. The equipment has been upgraded in recent years and covers a good range of ages.

Address: Bangor Bypass, Bangor Facilities: Toilets, BBQs, open oval

Gymea Park — Gymea

Best for: Ages 2–10

A well-maintained local park with solid playground equipment, open lawn, and some shade. Good for a relaxed morning in the northern part of the Shire.

Address: Gymea Bay Road, Gymea

Sutherland District Park — Sutherland

Best for: Ages 2–12

The main park near Sutherland's town centre. The park has playground equipment, a skate park, open ovals, and BBQ facilities. Easy to walk to from Sutherland station.

Address: Eton Street, Sutherland Facilities: Toilets, skate park, BBQs, open oval

Audley, Royal National Park — Audley

Best for: Ages 3+, natural setting

Not a playground in the traditional sense — but the Audley Weir area in Royal National Park is one of the best spots in Sydney to let kids run free in a natural setting. The calm river at the weir is safe for young swimmers, there are picnic facilities, and the surrounding bush is excellent for exploring.

Entry to the national park is $12 per vehicle (not per person).

Address: Audley Road, Royal National Park Facilities: Toilets, picnic areas, café (weekends), canoe hire

Caringbah area parks

Caringbah has several good neighbourhood parks — Loftus Street Reserve and Captain Cook Oval area both have decent playground equipment for younger kids. Worth knowing if you're in the Caringbah area without wanting to drive to Cronulla.

The overall approach: beach + playground

Many of Sutherland Shire's best playgrounds are within walking distance of Cronulla's foreshore. A good approach is to do Darook Park or Gunnamatta Park for playground time, then walk to the beach foreshore for the rest of the day — one trip that covers both.
