Free things to do in Bankstown with kids

Bankstown is one of Sydney's most underrated family suburbs — with Bicentennial Park close by, good council parks, and one of the busiest free events programs in the Canterbury-Bankstown area.

Bankstown doesn't get much coverage on the Sydney family activity scene, but Canterbury-Bankstown Council runs a strong events program and the area has good parks if you know where to look.

Bicentennial Park (Homebush)

Technically in the Canada Bay and Strathfield area, but Bicentennial Park is so close and so good that any Bankstown family trip should consider it. The park is over 100 hectares, covering former wetlands and industrial land that was rehabilitated into one of Sydney's best free outdoor spaces.

There's a wide network of walking and cycling paths, bird hides, playgrounds, open lawns, and access to Homebush Bay foreshore. The paths are excellent for bikes and scooters.

Address: Homebush Bay Drive, Homebush Entry: Free

Lake Gillawarna

A peaceful local reserve with a walking path around a small lake. The loop is around 2km — easy and flat, good for prams. Ducks and birds keep younger kids entertained. A quieter alternative when bigger parks are crowded.

Address: Henry Lawson Drive, Milperra Entry: Free

Paul Keating Park

Bankstown's central park, right in the middle of town near the station and library. Good for a quick outdoor break, with open lawns and seating. The park gets busy during the Bankstown festival season.

Address: North Terrace, Bankstown

Punchbowl Park

A well-maintained suburban park in Punchbowl with a good playground, cricket oval, and BBQ facilities. One of the better neighbourhood parks in the Canterbury-Bankstown area.

Address: The Avenue, Punchbowl Entry: Free Facilities: Toilets, BBQs, playground, open oval

Bankstown Library
