Blacktown is one of Sydney's most family-dense suburbs, and the council puts real effort into free activities. Here's the full rundown.

Nurragingy Reserve

The standout. Nurragingy Reserve is part of Western Sydney Parklands and sits about 10 minutes from Blacktown's town centre. It's a large, landscaped reserve with open lawn areas, water play features (in summer), a well-equipped playground, and walking trails through the surrounding bushland.

Entry to the reserve is free. Parking is free on weekdays; there's a fee on weekends and public holidays — so weekday visits are the sweet spot.

The playground caters well to different ages and the open lawns are good for picnics and kicking a ball. On warm days the water play area fills up fast, so arrive before 10am if you can.

Address: Richmond Road, Doonside Entry: Free (weekday parking free; weekend parking fee applies) Facilities: Toilets, café, BBQs, playground, water play, walking trails

Blacktown Showground

Blacktown Showground is one of the larger open spaces in the area. Outside of events it's mostly open oval and public space, but it's a useful overflow option when other parks are busy. The annual Blacktown Show (usually October) has free public days for children.

Address: Showground Road, Blacktown

Blacktown City Library

Blacktown City Library runs regular story time sessions for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Sessions run during school terms and are free to attend — book ahead as they fill up quickly.

The library also runs school holiday programs including craft workshops and kids activities. Most are free or low cost.

Find current library events by searching "Blacktown" on Discover.

Blacktown Council events

Blacktown City Council runs a strong free events program, particularly in school holidays. Past events have included outdoor movie nights, multicultural festivals, and holiday activity programs across various parks and venues in the area.

Featherdale Wildlife Park (low-cost)

Not free, but one of the best value wildlife experiences in Sydney. Featherdale is a 20-minute drive from Blacktown CBD and lets kids hand-feed kangaroos and see koalas up close. Entry is around $30 for adults and $18 for children (under 3 free). Worth knowing for when free options aren't enough on a school holiday.

Address: 217-229 Kildare Road, Doonside

Playgrounds

Blacktown has a network of good neighbourhood playgrounds including:

  • Rotary Park — centrally located, good all-ages equipment
  • Lalor Park Reserve — solid playground with open ovals
  • Blacktown Workers Sports Club Reserve — nearby green space

On a rainy day

  • Blacktown City Library — free, comfortable, good children's section
  • Westpoint Blacktown — the shopping centre has a playground area
  • Blacktown Aquatic Centre — entry from around $6.50 for kids

Getting there

Blacktown station is well-served by the T1 Western Line. The Nurragingy Reserve is accessible by car from Richmond Road or Doonside station (Richmond Line).
