Bondi is one of Sydney's most iconic spots, and the best news for families is that most of what makes it great is completely free.
Bondi Beach
The iconic one. Bondi Beach is free to visit, has year-round lifeguard patrols, and the southern end of the beach (near the Icebergs pool) tends to be calmer for smaller swimmers. The northern end near the rock shelf is good for exploring at low tide.
The foreshore promenade runs the full length of the beach — perfect for scooters, prams, and general messing about.
Best for: All ages; check surf conditions on hot days — Bondi can have strong rips. The kids' pool at the northern end (the paddling pool/enclosure near the surf club) is great for toddlers.
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee is 6km one-way, but you don't need to do the whole thing. The first section from Bondi to Tamarama (about 1.5km) is the most dramatic and suits older kids well.
The path is paved, stroller-accessible for the flatter sections, and offers great ocean views the whole way. Tamarama Beach is a nice spot to turn around — smaller and more sheltered than Bondi, with a grassy park area for a picnic.
Start: Bondi Beach car park, Campbell Parade Entry: Free
Centennial Park
About a 15-minute drive or 20-minute bus ride from Bondi, Centennial Park is one of the largest free parks in Sydney (189 hectares). It has multiple playgrounds within the park, cycling paths, duck ponds, BBQ areas, and the popular Centennial Park Café.
The cycling path around the park is a favourite for families with kids on bikes — it's mostly flat and car-free.
Entry: Free (parking fees apply) Facilities: Playgrounds, café, toilets, duck ponds, cycling paths, horse riding (paid)
Tamarama Park
Just south of Bondi on the coastal walk, Tamarama has a small grassed park above the beach with picnic tables and seating. Good for a rest with younger kids who don't want to tackle the full coastal walk.
Entry: Free Facilities: Toilets, some seating
Bondi Beach Park
The grassed area between Campbell Parade and the beach has playground equipment and open lawn. Good for a break when the kids are tired of sand but not ready to leave the beach area.
Entry: Free
Waverley Library
Waverley Library is a short bus ride from Bondi and runs free story time sessions and school holiday programs. The library is modern and the children's section is well-stocked.
Find current sessions at Discover — search "Waverley" or "Bondi".
Free events
Waverley and Randwick Councils both run community events throughout the year. Browse upcoming free events near Bondi at Little Rascal.
Getting there
Bondi is not on the train network — the easiest routes are the 333 bus from the CBD (via Oxford Street) or the 380 bus from Bondi Junction station (which is on the Eastern Suburbs Line).
Tip: Parking in Bondi on weekends is famously painful. The 333 bus from the CBD is genuinely the easiest option.
