Manly is one of Sydney's best free family destinations, and the good news is that the best parts of it don't cost anything. Here's how to make the most of a day (or half-day) in Manly with kids.

Manly Beach

Start with the obvious one. Manly Beach is free to visit, has lifeguards on duty in summer, and the northern end near the rock pool tends to be calmer for younger kids. The foreshore promenade is wide and easy for prams.

The beach itself is the main attraction — build in plenty of time, because getting kids to leave is always a negotiation.

Best for: All ages, but especially 3+ for the surf beach; younger kids enjoy the rock pool area

Shelly Beach

About a 10-minute walk south from the main beach along the coastal path. Shelly Beach is a small protected cove that doesn't get surf — just calm, clear water in a beautiful setting. It's a Marine Protected Area, which means great snorkelling for older kids.

There's a small kiosk, some seating, and a covered picnic area. Much quieter than the main beach on most days.

Address: Marine Parade, Manly Entry: Free Facilities: Toilets, kiosk, picnic tables

Manly Lagoon Reserve (Bilarong Reserve)

On the northern end of the beach near Queenscliff, the lagoon foreshore is a sheltered stretch of grassy park with a small sandy beach area that's suitable for very young children. The water is calm and the park has picnic areas and BBQs.

Address: The Corso/Pittwater Road end, near Queenscliff Entry: Free Facilities: BBQs, picnic tables, toilets

Fairy Bower Ocean Pool

Between Manly and Shelly Beach, Fairy Bower ocean pool is a free public rock pool carved into the headland. It's beautiful and suits all ages. Gets busy on summer weekends but quieter in the morning.

Entry: Free

Manly Dam Reserve

About a 5-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) from the Manly corso, Manly Dam Reserve is 400 hectares of native bushland with a large dam, swimming holes, mountain bike trails, and walking paths.

Swimming in the dam is free and permitted in designated areas. The walking trails range from easy lakeside paths to more challenging bush tracks. Good for families who want to escape the beach crowd.

Address: King Avenue, Manly Vale Entry: Free (small parking fee may apply on weekends)

Manly Library

Manly Library (part of Northern Beaches Council) runs free story time sessions during school terms. The library is in the centre of the village, easy to access on a day trip.

Find current story time sessions at Discover — search "Northern Beaches" or "Manly".

Getting there

The Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is one of the great Sydney experiences — about 30 minutes, and kids love it. The ferry wharf drops you right at the beach. The B-Line bus from the city is faster but less scenic.

Pro tip: Travel on an Opal card to keep the ferry cost low, and try to avoid peak hour on the ferry back — it can be crowded.
