Free things to do in Parramatta with kids

Parramatta has more free kids activities than most Sydney suburbs realise — from the heritage park and a genuine swimming hole to council story times and riverside playgrounds. Here's everything worth knowing.

Parramatta is one of the best suburbs in Sydney for free family activities — and most people don't realise just how much is on offer beyond the shopping centres. From a UNESCO World Heritage park to a genuine bush swimming hole and a packed council events calendar, here's everything worth knowing.

Parramatta Park

The big one. Parramatta Park is 85 hectares of open parkland right in the centre of the city, and entry is completely free.

It's built around Old Government House (a separate ticketed attraction), but the park itself — the lawns, the river foreshore, the walking paths — are free to use every day. Kids can run around on the massive open grass areas, explore near the river, and walk the Lennox Bridge, one of the oldest stone arch bridges in Australia.

There's also a free barbecue area near the Domain car park, which makes it a great option for a family picnic. On weekends and school holidays the park fills up with local families.

Tip: The Government Farm walking trail loops around the park's outer edge and takes about 40 minutes. Manageable for kids 5 and up.

Lake Parramatta Reserve

A genuine surprise. Lake Parramatta Reserve is a bushland reserve about 3km from Parramatta CBD, and it's home to one of Sydney's only freshwater swimming holes that's free to enter (in summer).

The reserve opens for swimming from around November through March. There's a sandy beach area, calm water, and it feels miles away from the city even though it's not. Outside of summer, the walking trails through the bushland are still open and free year-round.

Getting there: The reserve is at off Reservoir Road, North Parramatta. Free parking on site. No public transport directly to the gate — bring a car or ride.

Playgrounds

Parramatta has several solid playgrounds worth knowing about:

  • Ollie Webb Reserve — right next to the Parramatta Aquatic Centre, with good equipment for primary-age kids
  • Charles Street Reserve — a smaller neighbourhood park but popular with toddler-age kids
  • Parramatta River foreshore near Darcy Road — grassy area with basic play equipment, right on the water
  • Granville Park — a short drive from the CBD, good all-ages playground in a large open park

Parramatta City Library

Parramatta Library runs free story time sessions and school holiday programs throughout the year. Most events are bookable online and fill up quickly in school holidays.

The library itself is worth a visit — the building is new (opened 2022), and the children's section is one of the better ones in Greater Western Sydney.

Free council events

City of Parramatta runs a strong calendar of free family events, especially in school holidays. Past events have included free outdoor cinema nights, holiday workshops, and multicultural festivals in Centenary Square.

On a rainy day

A few low-cost options for wet weather:

  • Parramatta Library — free, plus air conditioning
  • Parramatta Aquatic Centre — entry from around $6 for kids
  • Castle Hill Showground markets (not free, but cheap and covered) — about 20 minutes away

Getting there

Parramatta is well-connected by train and ferry. The T1 and T5 lines both stop at Parramatta station. The Parramatta Light Rail is also a fun novelty for kids — it runs from Westmead to Carlingford.

Parramatta Park and the library are both a short walk from the station.
