Songs, Stories and Dance on Country (Ages 2-5)

About this event

Join us twice each month for Noongar stories, language, songs and dance in a natural setting at Riverside Gardens, Bayswater. Led by Noongar Elders Aunty Tj and Aunty Alta, sessions will also include creative activities using materials found beside the Derbal Yerrigan.

This program will enable families to participate with their young children in a teaching/learning framework of cultural knowledge sharing of First People's understanding of the natural world. It will also raise awareness in young people in Caring for Country (the environment) through the eyes of animals.

A light picnic morning tea will be served after each session to allow for families to socialise. The Oarhouse Cafe is also nearby.

Over the sixteen sessions, the program will be facilitated by two Noongar Elders who have a high level of cultural knowledge and expertise - also working in education, health and mental health, creative expression and social and emotional wellbeing.

The program will also entail, as a finale showcase, a play that displays a wide range of creativity, educational and environmental aspects. Both children (Coolungas) and parents/guardians, will participate in the Play, celebrating together their children's creative expression.

Bookings essential — register now to secure your place. Please only book for each child attending. In extreme weather, sessions will relocate to Bayswater Library.

This project has been supported by funding provided by the State Government of Western Australia, through the State Library’s Better Beginnings program.
